Dealing with "Bad Teeth": Advice

I have always envied those around me who seem to always have perfect smiles without even trying, because I feel like I was born with "bad teeth." While my teeth are in great shape now, it is only because I take great care to visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning and maintain good oral hygiene habits at home. While I used to get a lot of cavities, even though I thought I was doing "everything right" to keep them away, I am proud to say that I have been cavity-free for a couple of years now! I put a lot of research into what daily habits can wreak havoc on my teeth, and I thought it would be a shame not to share what has helped me with others who need the advice. I plan to post many oral health tips on my new blog!

Simple Dos And Don'ts Of Dental Implants

Dentist Blog

If you are going to be having dental implants put in to replace missing teeth, you want to make sure you know how to treat them right so they heal quickly and perform the duty they are intended to. While implants are known for being durable, there are still things you should be concerned with and things you want to refrain from doing so you don't cause damage to the implants and/or the surrounding tissue. This article will be a good reference for you to follow regarding the dos and don'ts of dental implants.

The dos of dental implants

  • Continue to follow a good oral hygiene routine. Neglecting your teeth and the implant can lead to gum disease and this can lead to failure of the implant.
  • Use a bridge and implant floss to floss around each implant. This floss has a spongy part that works well.
  • Use an interdental brush to get in the tight areas along the bottom of your dental implants.
  • Use a plastic dental pick to work trapped food out from between your implant and the teeth next to it.
  • Make it to all your routine dental checkups. Even if you feel everything is going fine, you want your dentist to take a look since they know exactly what to look for regarding warning signs.

The don'ts of dental implants

  • Don't smoke cigarettes. Cigarette smoke will deaden the tissues of your gums and this can lead to weakening of the tissue around the implants and affect their strength.
  • Stay away from hard foods that put added pressure on the implants. Since they are fused to the bone of your jaw, hard foods put you at risk of causing the implants to break out from the bone. If this happens, it will cause a great deal of pain and need to be addressed immediately.
  • Don't use your implants to open any types of packaging or to do things your teeth aren't intended for, such as untying tight knots or chewing on pen caps.

Now that you have a better understanding of how you should be caring for your dental implants, you will increase your chances of them lasting you for a longer period of time. If you notice any strange sensations or there are any changes in your gum, you want to get in to see your dentist (like those at Riverdale Dental Arts) so they can rule out a possible problem with the dental implants.
