Dealing with "Bad Teeth": Advice

I have always envied those around me who seem to always have perfect smiles without even trying, because I feel like I was born with "bad teeth." While my teeth are in great shape now, it is only because I take great care to visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning and maintain good oral hygiene habits at home. While I used to get a lot of cavities, even though I thought I was doing "everything right" to keep them away, I am proud to say that I have been cavity-free for a couple of years now! I put a lot of research into what daily habits can wreak havoc on my teeth, and I thought it would be a shame not to share what has helped me with others who need the advice. I plan to post many oral health tips on my new blog!

Whitening Practices To Try Before Cosmetic Dentistry

If you have yellow teeth, you might feel embarrassed of them. This can be a problem because it can undermine your self-confidence and make you feel as though you are not as attractive as you could be. You might not currently have the funds for professional teeth whitening by a cosmetic dentist, but there are luckily some practices that you can try at home while you are saving up the money. These should lighten your teeth and give you more confidence in the meantime.

1. Try Hydrogen Peroxide and Baking Soda

First, take your toothbrush and run it under water. This will get enough water into the brush to dilute the hydrogen peroxide when you finally add it. Once you have soaked your brush, add a squirt of hydrogen peroxide. Then, before the water or the hydrogen peroxide dries, immediately dip the head of your toothbrush in a box of baking soda. The baking soda will adhere to the brush's head, allowing you to easily get the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda mixture into your mouth. Start brushing for 2 to 3 minutes, or whatever your dentist has recommended. The baking soda that you are using will help bleach your teeth and the hydrogen peroxide helps to loosen stains. You can use this as a regular form of toothpaste.

Once you are done brushing, rinse your mouth out with water and spit the mixture into the sink. Do not swallow the hydrogen peroxide and the baking soda because it will not taste good.

2. Try Apple Cider Vinegar

If your teeth are just a little bit yellow or you want to protect them from further stains, you can try using apple cider vinegar. Pour a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into a cup, followed by two tablespoons of water. Mix the solution and then put it in your mouth. Swish it around. Do this before you go to bed every night because the acidity of the vinegar will help loosen any stains that you might have picked up that day, making the stains easier to remove completely simply by brushing. This will allow you to get a whiter smile over time.

3. Eat Fibrous Foods

Finally, consider eating foods that are fibrous, such as celery, apples, spinach, and broccoli. These foods will essentially exfoliate your teeth and remove any stains that you might have picked up without allowing them to permanently settle. Eating one of these foods each day will help you whiten your smile.
