I have always envied those around me who seem to always have perfect smiles without even trying, because I feel like I was born with "bad teeth." While my teeth are in great shape now, it is only because I take great care to visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning and maintain good oral hygiene habits at home. While I used to get a lot of cavities, even though I thought I was doing "everything right" to keep them away, I am proud to say that I have been cavity-free for a couple of years now! I put a lot of research into what daily habits can wreak havoc on my teeth, and I thought it would be a shame not to share what has helped me with others who need the advice. I plan to post many oral health tips on my new blog!
If you're scheduled for Gum Surgery Treatment Services, now's the time to start preparing for the recovery period. Gum grafting surgery is a relatively simple procedure, but it will still require several days of recovery before you're feeling back to normal. During the recovery period, your gums are going to be quite sensitive. In fact, you may experience some pain and discomfort for the first few days. Here are four simple tips you can follow to help you get through the initial recovery period.
Bring on the Ice Packs
Once you've had your surgery, your gums and your face are going to experience some swelling. In most cases, the swelling will be mild. However, you'll still need to take preventative measures to keep things under control. After all, significant swelling can increase the pain you'll experience. To control the swelling and reduce the pain, it's a good idea to bring on the ice packs. There are several ways to seek relief through ice therapy. First, place some crushed ice in a ziplock baggie and apply it to your face. Second, freeze several wet wash cloths and use them to reduce the swelling in your face. Finally, make your own ice packs using water and rubbing alcohol. Place one cup of rubbing alcohol and two cups of water in a ziplock baggie, and freeze until it forms a light slush. One benefit of the homemade ice packs is that you can refreeze them as necessary.
Stop Pain in its Tracks
You may experience some pain during the first few days after gum surgery. The last thing you want to do is let it get out of control. To stop that from happening, it's a good idea to start with the over-the-counter pain medication as soon as you get home. That way, you can start seeing relief from the pain before it becomes unbearable.
Find a Happy Medium
For at least the first 24-hours after your surgery, you'll need to be on a liquid, or soft food diet. You'll want to avoid anything that is either too hot or too cold, as both can cause serious problems during the recovery period. Instead, try to find a happy medium for the soft foods and liquids you're consuming during those first 24-hours.
Go Easy with the Brushing
Once you've had your gum surgery, you'll need to continue with proper oral hygiene, including brushing your teeth. This might be a bit uncomfortable while you're recovering from surgery. Be sure to go gently with the toothbrush, and avoid your gums as much as possible. Remember to purchase a new toothbrush before surgery, and to make sure that the bristles are soft.
If you're going to be having gum surgery, be prepared for the recovery period. In addition to the instructions your dentist will provide you with, use the tips provided here to help you have a safe and comfortable recovery from gum surgery.
