I have always envied those around me who seem to always have perfect smiles without even trying, because I feel like I was born with "bad teeth." While my teeth are in great shape now, it is only because I take great care to visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning and maintain good oral hygiene habits at home. While I used to get a lot of cavities, even though I thought I was doing "everything right" to keep them away, I am proud to say that I have been cavity-free for a couple of years now! I put a lot of research into what daily habits can wreak havoc on my teeth, and I thought it would be a shame not to share what has helped me with others who need the advice. I plan to post many oral health tips on my new blog!
Getting braces is not a small, quick decision. While wearing them, they are going to change the way you look, can be uncomfortable and they will be on for a while. Before going ahead and starting a treatment plan, here are some things to ask your orthodontist to make sure braces are right for you and that you get the very best treatment.
Is Your Orthodontist The Right One?
Ask your orthodontist for some before and after pictures of his own patients so you know he's definitely going to do a great job. If you're a nervous patient, maybe talk through why braces are an option and, from their answers, you'll know if this is the right orthodontist for you. If not, shop around to find someone who you're comfortable with.
What To Expect At The End
Sure, the answer here seems obvious - straight teeth. Many practices are able to offer a digital projection of what your finished smile should look like. If that projection matches you're after, that's a great start. It's good to know what their goal is as well as your own so that if there is further work required to get you the smile you want, it can be done at the same time.
Timing
The amount of time it will take to align teeth may change as the braces go on due to all manner of factors, but a skilled orthodontist like Reed & Sahlaney Orthodontics, LLP should be able to give you a rough idea of the time it will take. If you have a certain event in mind you'd like your teeth straight by, make sure you're planning far in advance.
Comfort
Braces work by applying a constant pulling and pressure to put teeth into their correct positions. This will mean a little discomfort. Talk to your orthodontist about the discomfort levels to expect and what measures can be taken to ease any pain.
Types of Braces
There are different types of braces available now, including 'invisible' clear plastic braces which are very discreet and may be more suitable for some types of work. Ask whether you are eligible for different types and how these will change the cost and the amount of time it takes to get a straight smile.
Cost
Make sure you know the costs and if you have insurance if it covers the treatment plan.
Don't forget, to get a perfect smile, it doesn't begin and end with an orthodontist making teeth straight. It starts with taking care of your teeth before they're straight and continues long after.
