I have always envied those around me who seem to always have perfect smiles without even trying, because I feel like I was born with "bad teeth." While my teeth are in great shape now, it is only because I take great care to visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning and maintain good oral hygiene habits at home. While I used to get a lot of cavities, even though I thought I was doing "everything right" to keep them away, I am proud to say that I have been cavity-free for a couple of years now! I put a lot of research into what daily habits can wreak havoc on my teeth, and I thought it would be a shame not to share what has helped me with others who need the advice. I plan to post many oral health tips on my new blog!
If you have neglected your oral health some by missing out on your twice-yearly cleanings and checkups, now is the time to make a change. It is important to make sure that you are seeing your family dentist for cleanings, checkups, and any problems that develop. However, fear of the dentist or an overwhelming feeling of anxiety can make it difficult to do that. Here are some ways you can help get comfortable or relaxed enough so you can keep up with your dental health needs.
Get Some Medication
For those who suffer from such extreme anxiety that they cannot even bear to get in a vehicle to head towards the dentist, there is the possible option of medication. Your dentist can prescribe a single dose or two of an anxiety medication that will help you relax enough to get your dental work or checkup completed. You will need to call the dentist's office to ask if this is something they can help you with so that you do not have to wait any longer to get the dental care that you need.
Find Some Good Music To Listen To
If you are especially anxious about the sounds that you often hear in a dental office, you might want to grab a pair of earbuds. This way, you can listen to some of your favorite music on your playlist. Just make sure that you are explaining to your dentist why you need to have the earbuds in. Explain that the music will help drown out the sound of dental equipment, which helps you remain comfortable in the chair so he or she can do their job.
Plan An Outing For Afterwards
You might want to think of a reward that you can give to yourself for getting through the dental appointment. This way, you will have something to look forward to right after you are done with your appointment. Some ideas include going out to lunch or dinner, shopping for a new outfit, or going to see that new movie you have been wanting to see.
With those tips, you should find that it is going to be a lot easier for you to get comfortable enough to go to the dentist. Whether one of the tips will do it or you have to make use of all three of them, it is important to make sure that you are following through for your oral health.
