I have always envied those around me who seem to always have perfect smiles without even trying, because I feel like I was born with "bad teeth." While my teeth are in great shape now, it is only because I take great care to visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning and maintain good oral hygiene habits at home. While I used to get a lot of cavities, even though I thought I was doing "everything right" to keep them away, I am proud to say that I have been cavity-free for a couple of years now! I put a lot of research into what daily habits can wreak havoc on my teeth, and I thought it would be a shame not to share what has helped me with others who need the advice. I plan to post many oral health tips on my new blog!
When you have dental implants, you have near-permanent replacement teeth that look and operate just like your original teeth do. Whether you have a full set of dental implants or just a few of these dental implants to replace missing or worn teeth, you should care for smile just like you did when you had your original teeth.
While dental implants are designed to last a lifetime and can be repaired from time to time to keep them in great condition. There are times you should visit the dentist to have these fixtures looked at. This way, you keep your mouth and smile healthy and appealing for as long as possible. Here are signs you need to have your dental implants inspected by a dental professional.
Your gums are swelling where the dental implants are
Once the dental implant has been placed, it can take up to half a year to fully heal. During this time, tenderness in the jaw and gums is expected. If the gums are swelling and worsening in pain and discomfort after getting dental implants or your mouth is sore long after the final teeth have been placed, go to your dentist to see if there is anything wrong with your gums that is causing them pain.
You can be given a numbing cream or a prescription to help manage pain, inflammation, or even possible infection if anything is discovered related to your oral health needs. Your dentist may do X rays to see what is causing your discomfort following your procedure as well.
Your dental implants feel loose
It's not uncommon for a dental implant to feel loose after it's been put in, especially after swelling in the gums and jaw go down. However, if your dental implants are feeling looser over time, the issue may be more related to loss of bone density and other issues, not the dental implants themselves. Whatever is causing your dental implants to feel loose, see your dentist as soon as you can.
If your dental implants fall out, the replacement teeth can take a while to create and you can put your exposed mouth at risk of further injury or illness. The sooner you see your dentist for loose-feeling dental implants, the better your repairs can be.
Your dentist can fit you in for a same-day appointment, or schedule your dental appointment for further on if your dental needs are not an emergency. Write down the concerns you have with your dental implants before you go to your dentist so you can explain your condition more accurately.
