I have always envied those around me who seem to always have perfect smiles without even trying, because I feel like I was born with "bad teeth." While my teeth are in great shape now, it is only because I take great care to visit the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning and maintain good oral hygiene habits at home. While I used to get a lot of cavities, even though I thought I was doing "everything right" to keep them away, I am proud to say that I have been cavity-free for a couple of years now! I put a lot of research into what daily habits can wreak havoc on my teeth, and I thought it would be a shame not to share what has helped me with others who need the advice. I plan to post many oral health tips on my new blog!
If you are the parent of a young child, you know the importance of keeping their teeth clean so dental decay does not occur. After your child starts getting their baby teeth, making an appointment with a dentist for a checkup is important. During the toddler stage, some children are fearful of new situations, including trips to the doctor or dentist. Here are a few steps to take to help your child achieve a successful first dental appointment.
Teeth Your Child About Tooth Care
Before you set foot inside a dentist's office, it is a good idea to teach your child the importance of caring for their teeth. Obtain books from your local library to encourage your toddler to be aware of why cleaning their teeth helps to keep them healthy. Allow your child to watch you as you brush your own teeth. Sing songs while you brush your toddler's teeth to make dental care a happy occasion. Ask your toddler to show you the proper way to brush their teeth by pretending to brush the teeth on a doll or stuffed animal.
Take A Tour Of A Dental Office
Contact local dental offices to find out which ones cater to children and whether they allow for tours to be conducted. When you find one that you believe suits your child's needs, make an appointment to bring your toddler to their establishment for a visit. Make sure the dentist is available to meet with your child during this time. Allow your child to sit in a dental chair and greet each staff member during your visit. These actions allow your child to become familiarized with the surroundings and people present in the dental office you have chosen. This will make it easier for your child to have their teeth cleaned when their appointment day arrives.
Bring Your Child To Watch Your Own Cleaning
If possible, schedule an appointment for a cleaning of your teeth before your child's appointment date. Ask that the dental staff have a chair available for your toddler to sit in while your teeth are cleaned. During this session, allow your child to ask the dentist and hygienist questions about the tools they are using and the processes they are conducting to clean your teeth. This allows your child to observe all procedures as they are done so they are aware of what they themselves will be required to do when it is time for their own session.
